Scrappy

Food Waste Prevention and Composting Kit

Design Brief

Scrappy was a collaborative project conducted by myself and my teammates Kacey O’Connor and Anabel Graciela.

Scrappy is a service kit for families that teaches them about food waste and how they can minimize their own waste in the comfort of their homes.

The U.S discards 40 million tons of food every year. (30-40% of the entire US food supply = 219 lbs of waste per person). More than 80% of discarded foods are still consumable or could be repurposed into soil rather than going into landfills. Many people across the country aren’t aware of the negative impacts that food waste has on the environment.

My team designed a kit that not only teaches families how to minimize and reduce their food waste, but also provides easy options for composting at-home as well as a line of products the families could purchase to start their composting journey.

Research

Looked into the composting process and what does and doesn’t go into composting. Also looked into supply chains to see if that was a valid route to go, but realized that it was too big of a venture to pursue. Researched the misconceptions of food waste and composting as well as ways to prevent food waste and products that can aid in that endeavor.

Conducted benchmarking for industrial to home methods of food waste prevention and low-tech to high-tech.

Also interviewed a couple of people about food waste, composting, and how they compost in their homes.

Goals & Objectives

  • Create a kit that offers the user a variety of pathways on how the user can address their own personal food waste and how to dispose it

    • Create educational material for families to learn and execute

    • Offer games and activities for the whole family

    • Provide resources and other food waste/composting services

  • Creating a system/solution to manage food waste

    • Alerts on food freshness, provide recipes for food stock

  • Create a product line of a small composting bin, larger bin, and tumbler

Initial Ideation & Exploration

Kacey O’Connor created sketches for the educational kit. Anabel Graciela created sketches for the app and a food monitoring device that we ended up not moving forward with because there were too many variables and not enough time. I created sketches for the composting product line.

 Opening the delivery box

The design of the graphics, box, and contents was done by Kacey O’Connor.

 opening The App

The design of the app was done by Anabel Graciela.

 Composting Product line

The design of the countertop compost bin, compost bin, and compost tumbler was done by myself.

I was inspired by modern and simplistic designs. The colors are a part of the graphics color palette and are also nature-inspired.
